Maekawa restaurant

A Hungry Student’s Oasis

When the Maekawas decided to buy Maekawa Bar (601 S. King St.) several years ago, they were fulfilling a wish from the husband, who was dying of cancer. He had asked them to open a bar where his friends could gather to chat, drink and eat.

The husband saw his wish fulfilled before he died, and now Maekawa is a mecca for college students looking for healthy, affordable food and drink.

Of course, Maekawa serves more than hungry college students. But the cozy, laid-back atmosphere and the extensive menu of inexpensive dishes are reminiscent of the izakaya in Japan serving college students. Try some agedashi tofu for $4, a pork-kimchi nabe, or hotpot, for $6, or for just $5.50 gorge on a massive, football-shaped pork cutlet stuffed with garlic and melted cheese. It goes by the imposing name of Genton.

Of all the izakaya in Seattle, Maekawa is the one that looks like it came straight from Japan. Genton is about the only hint that you’re not in Tokyo. It’s a warm and inviting place.
